Living on the lake's southern rim
Few towns know storm water like the Glades. In the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, the storm pushed the lake over its southern edge, flooding hundreds of square miles to depths as great as 20 feet and sweeping away homes in Belle Glade, Canal Point, Chosen, Pahokee and South Bay. The Herbert Hoover Dike was built in response, and an 18-year, $1.5 billion repair of its 143-mile span was completed in 2023.
Today most damage comes from wind and rain rather than the lake. Hurricane Wilma in 2005 left extensive roof damage, broken windows and downed power lines across South Florida. A torn shingle, a lifted roof panel or a window that lets in wind-driven rain can soak ceilings and walls, and a power outage that shuts off air conditioning lets moisture and mold build up quickly.
Palm Beach County Emergency Management still plans for the unlikely event of a dike breach. Know your evacuation route, and keep in mind that standard homeowners policies usually do not cover rising floodwater without a separate flood policy.
Right after a storm
- Stay away from downed lines and do not walk through standing water that may be energized.
- Photograph roof, ceiling, wall and floor damage before you move anything. Keep receipts for tarps and supplies.
- Cover roof openings or broken windows only if you can do it safely; a restoration provider can tarp and board up.
- Get wet carpet, rugs and furniture off the floor if you can. Drying within the first day or two matters.
- Report the claim to your insurer early. After big storms, adjusters and contractors book up fast.
